Fringe’s “Welcome to Westfield” might possibly have been my favorite episode of the season so far. It was creepy, suspenseful, and even had a bit of an apocalyptic feel to it.
The episode is set up with a line of cars on a road all stopping at the same place, while the drivers watch as a plane overhead loses control of its engines, and plummets out of the sky. For me, just this set up was cool enough to get me hooked and excited for the rest of the episode.
The Fringe team, of course, is called to the scene after all of the cars start up once again. Walter discovers that there is strong electromagnetic activity in the area (any Lost fans out there??) and tests the idea by throwing a wheel rim against another car, and it sticks. With an urge from Walter for rhubarb pie, the team goes into the nearby town of Westfield. They soon discover that they cannot escape, which the show portrays in a really cool sequence. And of course, in typical Fringe fashion, insanity ensues.
Insane bipolar man with two pupils?! Check.
Insane woman with two sets of teeth?! Check.
Insane man with TWO FACES?! Check.
Rifle-bearing Peter being awesome? Check.
I don’t want to give much away for those who have not watched it yet, but this episode was top-notch. It set up the story for the rest of the season, and even had a great cliffhanger of an ending.
For those who don’t want Fringe, WHO ARE YOU?! This episode was a great one for newbies to jump on the Fringe train, as it went over some of the more important back-story, and also set up what is sure to be an amazing finale in May.
